Baldy Bane Theatre are funded by Road Safety Scotland to present a programme of theatre in education productions to primary and secondary schools across the whole of Scotland. The Nine Lives of Roddy Hogg, Friends Disunited and The Journey were seen by over 40,000 pupils last year in schools from Shetland to Stranraer. The plays are seen as an integral part of the curriculum and as a way of further presenting the road safety message. The tours are organised in partnership with local Road Safety Units.
We are currently working on a new inter-generational play for Road Safety Scotland. The first draft has been agreed for the play Better To Be Late Than Dead On Time and we are about to start marketing a pilot tour in early 2012.
Baldy Bane also work in collaboration with education and social work agencies to create tailor-made productions that highlight many issues facing young people today and are linked to delivering the Curriculum for Excellence 4 Capacities, to enable each child or young person to be a successful learner, a confident individual, a responsible citizen and an effective contributor.
Gold Stars and Dragon Marks was first commissioned by the National Children and Young People’s Protection and Prevention Network to promote the Scottish Government’s Preventing Domestic Abuse Delivery Plan. The play was created to support schools in delivering effective and innovative school-based prevention initiatives. The production also helps to achieve the aims of the Curriculum for Excellence both in terms of empowering children to build healthy relationships in the future and to better support those affected by domestic abuse at present.
“It ticks all the boxes, it’s very cross-curricula, English, Drama, PSE. It’s also ticking all the four capacities: confident individuals, the responsible citizens, the effective contributors, the successful learners”
Also commissioned by the National Children and Young People’s Protection and Prevention Network, Crush is a humorous and thought-provoking theatre-in-education project, which looks at the serious issues of abuse within teenage relationships, gender stereotyping and the media’s impact on young people’s body image and behaviour.
“This production was minimalist, four actors, basic props. It was attention grabbing, funny, serious, right length, very powerful and appropriate to the target audience. Workshop at end was very effective. Every school should get an opportunity to see this well written, thought provoking drama!”
Cyberspyder was first commissioned by Dundee and Angus Councils to tackle the problem of misuse of the internet by predatory paedophiles, who groom children through social networking sites. The production also deals with the growing incidence of cyber-bullying among young people via new technologies.
“The pupils were engrossed in the play – it clearly hit home an important message. Very pleased with the teacher’s pack. Easy to integrate into our PSHE programme. Thanks”
